Tips to feel great on your vacation!

We love getting away as much as possible! Whether it is a weekend getaway to the mountains or jet-setting across the border, we look forward to recharging, unplugging, and enjoying quality time with each other. We work hard to move daily and fuel our bodies with nutritious food. We shouldn’t spoil all our hard work even though we are slowing down the pace for a few days! For this reason, I have put together four tips to help ensure that you maintain your progress even while relaxing and taking some well-deserved time away!

1) Get outside!
One of the best ways to be able to slow down and enjoy new areas is to go for a walk or jog through them. You will soak up so much more of your surroundings as opposed to driving by and with all the new things to look at you might even forget about the physical benefits you are achieving! Depending on where you are traveling to, you can search websites, blogs, or check out the local information centre for scenic hikes and trails to enjoy! If you are planning your travel around physical activity, like downhill or cross-country skiing, then you’re already set!

The current Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines recommend a minimum of 150 minutes per week of moderate to vigorous cardiovascular activity, in bouts of 10 minutes or more. Have fun exploring new ways to get your heart rate up!

2) Fuel smart!
One of my favourite parts of traveling is trying new restaurants and menu items! That being said, the fuel we choose helps determine how we feel the rest of the day, so keep this in mind when selecting restaurants and menu items. It can be fun to scope out local gems that feature local farmers and products! You really want the fries on the side? Or they have an incredible sounding dessert? Awesome! Enjoy it and don’t look back! You are on vacation and it is 100% okay to indulge a little!

One of the best travel tips I can offer someone is to stop by the local grocery store of wherever they are visiting to purchase a few “essentials” for their room. If you are traveling by car, then packing a small cooler works too! Breakfast is the most important meal of your day, especially if you will spend it exploring. Most hotel rooms have a mini fridge, or one can be requested, so we stock up on individual Greek yogurt containers, delicious granola, and fresh fruit to eat in our hotel room. This helps us with a nutritious and delicious start to our day and is also nicer on the wallet than eating out!

3) Sweat!
Moving your body intentionally even while on vacation will keep your energy up throughout your day and can also help you feel completely at ease with the dessert choice you made. Some of our favourite ways to have fun and move while away are to check out local fitness classes or scope out the hotel gym! Making this something that you do alongside those who you are traveling with can increase the fun factor, especially if these are people you don’t often get to workout with! Unsure if you will have access to a gym while away? No problem, throw a mini band in your bag and do a quick 15 minute routine to start your day!

4) Enjoy!
Just as I mentioned above, you are on vacation, so kicking back and enjoying an extra glass of wine or fries as your side, or an enticing dessert are perfectly acceptable (and awesome!) options! Finding pockets of time and new ways to move your body, while still being mindful of fueling your body with nutritious food most of the time will keep you feeling your best to make some great memories.
